Instructions
- Place the PosiPatch in the flex ring with the arrows of the Patch lined up with the arrows on the flex ring. The side of the Patch with holes around it should face up when magnets are facing down, and vice versa.
- Make sure Patch is cleaned by rinsing with Deionized (DI) water. You can use the water packaged with the kit or use bottled DI water from the store. (NOTE: Distilled, Demineralized and Deionized water are all acceptable).
- Select a cleaned area of metal. Make sure all spent abrasive, dust, and other debris have been removed. Note: old pitted steel may not give a good seal.
- Attach flex tube to end of syringe. If syringe is not new, rinse with DI water.
- From the small plastic sample vial, put 2.5 to 3 ml of DI water into the syringe and carefully insert the syringe to avoid bending the flex tube. Inject the water it into the PosiPatch. (NOTE: there will still be approximately 10ml of water left in the vial). Leave the needle in the Patch and gently massage the Patch for about 30 seconds. Over the next 3 minutes remove the water from the Patch and reinject it into the Patch 2 to 3 times, repeating the massage process.
- At the end of 3 minutes remove the water from the Patch and inject the water back into the same small sample vial the water was removed from. Place the vial in the wooden sample holder to ensure it is stable and will not fall over when titrator testing tube is inserted.
- Use the hole in the vial holder to break off both ends of the sample tube. Insert the tube into the vial with the arrow facing up. Water will slowly wick up the tube on its own. When the sample reaches to the upper limit of cotton filling, remove the vial and read the scale. The color above the blue line changes from pink to white to indicate chlorides: the extent of white color above the blue line indicates the chloride level. If the stained layer is blurred, oblique, or otherwise unclear, read the scale at the center between the maximum and minimum range of the limit of stain.
- NOTE: The titrator tube reads in ppm. The units to report for the chloride ion test are μg/cm2. Because of the ratio of water in the sample vial to the area of steel sampled, this is the same as ppm for the purposes of this test. (This is because there is an equal number of millileters in the sampel vial as cm2 under the PosiPatch).
- Rinse Patch with DI water and repeat as often as needed. The Patch is good until the seal begins to leak.
- If test indicates chloride levels beyond acceptable limits, use HoldTight 102 to remove soluble salts.

Kitagawa Chloride Ion Titrator Tubes
Measuring Range: 1-60 ppm
Sampling time: 1.5-2 minutes
Color change Pink to White
Detectable Limit 0.5 ppm
Storage Condition: In a cool, dark place, not exceeding 25˚ C (77˚ F)
CORRECTION FOR AMBIENT CONDITIONS:
No temperature correction is necessary
INTERFERENCES:
Coexistence of Bromide, Cyanide, or Iodide ion with Chloride will give a higher reading. Sulfide ion produces a brown stain in the bottom of reagent (pink) layer and gives higher readings. The pH values of test sample should be within 2.0 and 12.0.
CHEMICAL REACTION IN THE DETECTOR TUBE:
Cl– + Ag2CrO4 -> AgCl
CAUTION:
Keep detector tubes out of reach of children and tubes should be discarded in accordance with relevant regulations.
USER RESPONSIBILITY:
For accurate results, all components of this kit must be used in accordance with the instructions provided.
Dispose of tubes according to relevant regulations, if any.
The user is solely responsible for ensuring that the equipment is operated, maintained and used in strict accordance with these instructions. Do not use titration tubes beyond their expiration date or that have a color different than referred to here. The manufacturer and manufacturer’s distributor shall not be otherwise liable for any incorrect measurement or any damages, whether damages result from negligence or otherwise.
This test complies with SSPC Guide 15 and the new Proposed ISO 8502-15
